I wonder if the business understood the cost impact of the "problem" better would they be more focused on creating (=investing in) an environment/culture where people - if finding themselves down the wrong route - are inclined to mention this in a way that rectifies the problem for others? Having mechanisms, tools, or better still people (enter: data steward) to alert colleagues of the route to take? Is it a chicken and egg thing - which comes first? A cost benefit analysis or the data steward? Curious to know how to gauge the "cost of the problem" when it's not transparent (at least to me ... and I confess to knowing nothing about data quality) how to collect the financial impacts?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216507292959046873.post-84829863943750806372012-08-01T04:58:51.457+10:002012-08-01T04:58:51.457+10:00Thanks for the useful post. Also, at least in the case of the website migration space that I work in, there is the question of the quality level (and repurcussions) as well, so it's not just a migrate or don't migrate decision but what quality the resulting data (content) will be.David Hobbshttp://hobbsontech.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216507292959046873.post-32706073509344852072012-05-10T06:01:12.079+10:002012-05-10T06:01:12.079+10:00Hi Scott

A truism, yet sadly ignored by those who see their role as that of either enlightening the masses in data theory or policing the data misdeeds of others.

The good new is that there are many excellent data practitioners out there who add value in all that they do. Still more of this type are needed.

I would go further with your advice to data governance practitioners and say that if there is nothing in there organisation to which they can add value, and data governance is their primary role, then they should resign.

If data governance is their passion then they should seek a post in this field in another organisation. If it is not then they should find their passion.

Again, great post.

Regards
JohnJohn Owenshttp://integrated-modeling-method.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216507292959046873.post-13583952361481452222011-11-29T12:32:55.665+11:002011-11-29T12:32:55.665+11:00Hi Scott

Anything that masks/hides risk proximity is bad. A lot of inexperienced PMs think that this is an effective way of managing risk but as you say it is just "putting your head in the sand"...Matt_Skalickyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04412943074634067922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216507292959046873.post-82932250191188220782011-11-11T20:47:44.123+11:002011-11-11T20:47:44.123+11:00Brain the size of a planet and what have they got ...Brain the size of a planet and what have they got you doing?

Seriously, great advice! I came across a migration "plan" the other day to migrate an entire national database in 8 weeks with a weekend of testing at the end. They haven't even received a cut of sample data yet so they clearly have no data quality vision or landscape analysis in place.

The problem wit ownership is that no-one really wants to own a migration. Because the company typically has no clue as to the processes, skills, contracts and technology involved they get it wrong.

So many organisations just download frameworks and plans off the web and pass off as "strategy" but these are just guides, they need to create a roadmap, the vision, the end goal and actionable steps that reflect their type of business. Your living document tip is another tip that so many ignore.

All this needs leadership and ownership, the crux of your post I guess.

Awesome writing, keep it coming!Dylan Jones (Editor/Community Manager)http://www.dataqualitypro.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216507292959046873.post-10615498270862622072011-10-21T15:11:04.132+11:002011-10-21T15:11:04.132+11:00Great post, hits some very important nails on the ...Great post, hits some very important nails on the head. It was very hard to get nominated Data Stewards to take their job seriously. More often than not the pervasive tone was "its an IT problem". The second biggest issue was "its MY data". I think find an effective "data steward" can be classed as one of the key milestones of any Data Governance endeavour.Matt_Skalickyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04412943074634067922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216507292959046873.post-91121187621854087792011-09-29T18:51:09.351+10:002011-09-29T18:51:09.351+10:00Scotty
